Dr. Terry Vankka DMD, FRCD(C)

Dr. Vankka graduated with honours from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia in 1981 with a Doctorate of Dental Medicine. He received scholarship awards in Prosthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. He was active in the Dental Undergraduate Society and fulfilled the positions of Vice-President and President in his final two years of dental school. Upon graduation, he was awarded the UBC Dental Alumni Association Scholarship and membership in the OKU Dental Fraternity.

Dr. Vankka began his career as a member of the Canadian Forces Dental Services in Halifax where he was practiced both on land and at sea on the HMCS Protecteur. Upon completion of his initial contract, in 1984, Dr. Vankka returned to his hometown of Kamloops, BC and entered private practice. He practiced full scope general dentistry with an emphasis on oral surgery. During his time in Kamloops, he maintained hospital privileges. His interest and desire to pursue specialty training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery lead him re-enroll with the CF. Following posting to Cold Lake, St. Hubert and Belgium (NATO), he began post-graduate residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Texas Medical Center in Houston in 1996. Upon graduation, he successfully completed the RCDC specialty examinations and was awarded his Fellowship in September 2000.

Dr. Vankka was posted to Edmonton as a member of the Canadian Forces and fulfilled the role of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for the western region until his retirement in 2005. He joined Kingsway Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as an associate in the fall of 2000. Upon retirement from the CF in 2005, he became a partner at KOMFS practicing full scope oral and maxillofacial surgery in a busy group practice. Since arriving in Edmonton, he has been active as a clinical professor teaching Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Vankka retired from full time private practice in the fall of 2018. Since then he has continued to teach at the University of Alberta and perform Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in a hospital setting. He is also continuing to work in private practice on a part-time basis.

Dr. Vankka is thrilled to join Dr. Wagner and his outstanding team as an associate at Provincial Oral Surgery. “As I transition into retirement, I am excited to have the opportunity to continue to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery and provide care to patients. I love to solve problems and provide solutions that address both the patient’s needs and wants.”
